Civil Ceremonies

  • The Abbey Room is the perfect setting for your civil ceremony and offers the convenience of having your whole wedding day in one place.  No worries about logistics and transport!
  • The £395 fee covers room set-up and change-over for the wedding breakfast.
  • Civil ceremonies must be booked directly with the registrars, and a separate fee is payable to the Registry Office for this service.

Room Dressing

To further enhance the ambience of your special day you may wish to consider chair covers to suit your décor theme and colour scheme, or other room dressing  & decorating services.  Please ask if you would like recommendations.

Capacity

The Abbey Room can host up to 90 guests for a civil ceremony and wedding breakfast. Then up to 120 guests for an evening celebration. If you have any questions at all please talk to one of our team.

Timings

We have no set rules on what time a civil ceremony can take place with us. Any time after 12noon is the usual choice but exceptions can be made if an earlier start suits you better. With regards to the end of the evening, we are licensed to serve alcohol until Midnight. 

Bedrooms

Once you have confirmed your wedding date and paid the deposit we are happy to reserve all available bedrooms should you require them.  We will ask you to complete a room allocation form (so you can decide which guests will be staying with us and which of our rooms would be the most suitable for them.) Once the form is returned we will contact each of these guests to secure their booking with credit card details.

All rooms must be allocated and confirmed a minimum of 4 months prior to your wedding date, after which any unallocated rooms will be released for sale.

For weddings taking place within a four-month time frame, we will hold the bedrooms for a period of two weeks for the same process to take place.

Terms and Conditions

There is a minimum number of 70 catered for guests to enjoy one of our evening packages.  We can accommodate up to 120 guests for an evening celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning your special day can present lots of questions, so here are answers to a few of the most common ones to start with. Remember we are always here to help you, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Q: When do we next meet?A: As often or as little as you like – it’s really up to you. Following the booking of your wedding, we don’t need to hear from you until 6-8 weeks prior to your special day but we would rather not leave it all until then. Our ‘What’s Next?’ guide breaks the timings down for you in a little more detail, and if we feel like we haven’t heard from you for a while we will get in touch to see how your plans are coming together. 



Q: When will we need to pay? 
A: Following your initial deposit of £250, you’re free to sit back and relax. So much can change between the time of booking your wedding and the time of final details, so you won’t need to pay any more until 1 month before the date.

Q : Do you have payment plans?
A : If you’d rather not leave the full balance until a month before the date that’s no problem at all, you can make interim payments whenever suits you, and spread the costs out throughout the planning process.

Q : Do we have to give our guests a choice when it comes to food?
A : No not at all, sometimes a choice can make things much more complicated! Instead pick your favourite dishes from our menu and then just let us know about any dietry requiremtns that your guests have and we will work with you to make sure evenyone gets something they will enjoy.

Q: How many meal choices are we allowed to offer our guests? 
A: You may choose 2 starters , 2 mains (plus 1 vegetarian), and 2 desserts. For children you may also choose 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts from the children’s menu.



Q: What about dietary requirements?
A: All our food here is made fresh on the premises, which means we can alter the recipes to accommodate for all dietary requirements. As long as we know in advance, there won’t be any problems!

Q: Do we come to taste the menu at all? 
A: Yes, of course. We charge a reduced rate of £5.00 per Starter, £10.00 per main and £5.00 per Dessert. Why not make an occasion of it and bring a few friends? Talk to us to book this – don’t forget, we need to know your menu choices at least a week before. If you would like to try the roast beef, this would need to be done on a Sunday.

Q: Do we need to gather a pre-order? 
A: Yes as this makes things run much more smoothly. The best way to do this would be to put your menu options in your invitations with a space for your guests to respond. This might be on a separate slip of card, or it might be as simple as a space to write their initials next to their preferred choice. You would then write their order on the back of their name card – just so nobody forgets what they ordered! To make things simple, I have enclosed a template for you to fill in and return to us. 


Q: How many guests can I sit at a table?
A: We can seat up to 10 people per round table. 



Q: What is the maximum capacity?
A: The Abbey Suite can accommodate 90 guests for the Civil Ceremony and day reception, with 120 guests for the evening reception.

Q: How many bedrooms do you have?
A: We have 7 bedrooms in total. When you book your wedding with us, we automatically book all 7 bedrooms for you. Assuming they are all available. With our help, you would allocate your guests a bedroom. I have enclosed a template for you to fill in, which will hopefully make it easier.
Q: Can we use the Abbey for pictures?
A: Yes, you are more than welcome to use Sawley Abbey as the back drop for your pictures. We do ask that you make a donation to English Heritage to help preserve this special piece of history. Occasionally, maintenance takes place to preserve what is left of the Abbey, in which case there may be some scaffolding up. Generally speaking, most photographers are able to work around this and either crop it out, or go for close ups rather than long shots, etc, so don’t panic!

Q: Are we able to bring our own alcohol? A: As a general rule, no. We aren’t licensed for the consumption of alcohol that has been purchased off the premises. However, we do allow corkage. For wine, the corkage is £10 per bottle, and for anything fizzy, e.g. Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, etc, the corkage is £15 per bottle. Prior permission must be sought for this arrangement.



Q: When can we decorate the room? 
A: We are here to help you. Let us deal with all the fiddly bits, like putting name cards out, favours, centrepieces, etc. As long as we have detailed instructions and diagrams of where you want everything, there is no trouble at all. Should you wish to, you can book the room the night before your wedding within 3 months prior for any setting up you wish to do. The price for this is £250, subject to availability. Time restrictions may apply.

Q: What is your cancellation policy? 
A: In the unfortunate event that you might need to cancel your wedding, we would need a letter signed by both of you, explaining that you are cancelling. The initial deposit of £250 would then be lost, and the bedrooms that were blocked out for you would be released. Depending on how close to the event you are cancelling, further payment may be required. For more details, please see Terms & Conditions.
